| Search
engine submission is different that search engine optimization.
Search engine submission is the act of submitting a website,
by hand or automatically, to the search engines and directories.
Search engine optimization, however, is the act of writing
metatags and keyword-rich text for a page that will be indexed
by the search engines and directories.
The natural
progression is to first perform search engine optimization
(SEO) on a website and then conduct search engine submission
so that the search engines and directories will index the
website and display the results when their visitors perform
a search. In terms of SEO, however, manual submissions achieve
better results and are less risky than automatic submissions.
The trouble
with automatic submissions is that many of the major search
engines will reject the submissions or even worse, penalize
a website for automatic submissions. None of the top search
engines, however, will penalize a website for manual submissions.
There are many
software applications and free submission sites on the Internet
to help those who do wish to submit automatically. A word
of advice, though if you are dead set on automatic submissions
- submit to the major search engines manually and save the
automatic submissions for the smaller search engines and
directories.
Be careful about
paying a company who will submit your website to thousands
of search engines and directories. First, you will be spending
your hard-earned cash for this service. Second, you may
not gain any traffic from this submission. Third, you may
end up on a bunch of free-for-all (FFA) sites, link farms
or banner farms and will be penalized by the major search
engines for having your links on these sites.
Once again if
you are dead set on submitting your website to some of the
smaller search engines and directories, here are a couple
of free resources below to help in this effort. Another
word of caution, some places in these resources will submit
your site to the major as well as minor search engines and
directories. They generally have a feature were you can
uncheck the SE's that you don't wish to submit to, so it
is best to find out first where your site will be submitted,
uncheck the major search engines, and send away.
Search
