| Once
your website has been optimized and you have gone to the trouble
to do reciprocal link exchanges, it is now time to submit
your website to the major and minor search engines and directories.
It is recommended that the major directories such as Dmoz.org
be submitted to by hand. There is much evidence now days that
software submissions to the major search engines and directories
will be ignored. Submitting to Google and Yahoo! Search is
now unnecessary as long as you have some incoming links pointing
to your site.
If you submit
your site through MSN (bcentral.com) for a fee, you will
also be able to submit to many minor search engines and
directories as well. There are many "free submit"
sites on the Internet plus submission software you can buy,
but only use these methods for the minor search engines
and directories.
Most search
engines and directories will index new websites within 1
- 3 months. Many times, the first phase of indexing is placing
the website in a "holding area" for a while, while
presumably other data about the site (like incoming links)
is being gathered. Once released from this "holding
area" the website will start to make its way up the
search engine rankings.
With Yahoo!
Directory you will need to hand-submit your website as there
is a pretty hefty listing fee that needs to be paid by credit
card when signing up for their services. If you have a non-commercial
website and wish to get into LookSmart.com you can do so
through the backdoor by submitting your site to Zeal.com.
LookSmart uses some of the Zeal database for their results.
